Summary

Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy。 It serves as a salute to New York City during the late sixties and seventies and to its rich and poor, its hustlers and hellions。 A true fable, it is a portrait of two young artists' ascent, a prelude to fame。

I'm almost 40 books into my goal of 55 for 2021。 This is in my top three。 There's not much new to say about the power and earnestness of Patti Smith's prose。 She's a stunning writer and she carries all the raw energy of 70's NYC punk into "Just Kids。" I love reading but books rarely evoke the same powerful emotions as, say, music for me。 This was different。 The last 50 pages are flawlessly beautiful and so heart-wrenching that I found myself choked up, remembering the friends of friends who died I'm almost 40 books into my goal of 55 for 2021。 This is in my top three。 There's not much new to say about the power and earnestness of Patti Smith's prose。 She's a stunning writer and she carries all the raw energy of 70's NYC punk into "Just Kids。" I love reading but books rarely evoke the same powerful emotions as, say, music for me。 This was different。 The last 50 pages are flawlessly beautiful and so heart-wrenching that I found myself choked up, remembering the friends of friends who died of AIDS in the early 90's and also the relationships from my early 20's that seemed so monumental that their toxicity and danger was hidden until much later。 Amazing book。 Learned about it in a "Three Books Richard Branson Thinks You Should Read" article which is the least punk rock place you could learn about a book。 。。。more

This book definitely made me cry, even though I knew the end。 Smith is clearly an amazing and talented artist。 I knew just a smidgen about her。 This book definitely filled in many of the gaps I had and more。 Ultimately this book is about love, admiration, respect and the kind of deep friendship that is once in a lifetime。 There aren't many books that explore a love so great that it transcends romantic love, so this was lovely in that respect。 It's mind boggling how many people Smith crossed path This book definitely made me cry, even though I knew the end。 Smith is clearly an amazing and talented artist。 I knew just a smidgen about her。 This book definitely filled in many of the gaps I had and more。 Ultimately this book is about love, admiration, respect and the kind of deep friendship that is once in a lifetime。 There aren't many books that explore a love so great that it transcends romantic love, so this was lovely in that respect。 It's mind boggling how many people Smith crossed paths with - and many make cameos。 I found myself constantly googling names of people I didn't know, but soon realized knowing them was less important than knowing the impact they had on Smith's life。 If you have ever had a friend to whom you feel deeply connected and love with all your heart - this will hit home for you。 。。。more

I loved this book so much, it now has a very special place in my heart as well as Patti and Robert’s story。 I love Patti’s writing, how she expresses herself, she makes everything sound and look beautiful。I loved everything about this book, the writing, the story, the art, the poems, the photographs, everything。I would totally recommend this book, even tho I sobbed a LOT, it’s a very beautiful book that ends up feeling like it took a part from you。

Lyrical, mystical, profound。 An unforgettable portrait of the incredible bond between two artists, friends, lovers, kindred spirits。

didn't like it and I couldn't even finish it because I had NO motivation to read (which never happens, even with boring books)。 Too fast paced for me to keep up and get emotionally attached to any characters。 didn't like it and I couldn't even finish it because I had NO motivation to read (which never happens, even with boring books)。 Too fast paced for me to keep up and get emotionally attached to any characters。 。。。more

I appreciate her writing style, but definitely not my favorite。 A memoir that will most likely resonate with others who shared in the zeitgeist of the 60’s and 70’s art and music scene。

org/2021/09/18/p。。。 。。。more

The first half of the book gripped me with its romanticism and beautiful writing。 I felt myself progressively falling in love with Robert through Patti’s descriptions of their time together。 After a while, however, it started to feel like a protracted listing of events, until the ending, which inevitably touched my heart。

A study of the artist。 Bleak, slow to start, with beautiful lines and gaping imagery。 Smith has decadently illustrated the purpose of the artist, the sublime, that which cannot be named。 The tone reads as sacrificial, this is what art forces in a person, what it creates。

One of the most beautiful books I’ve read in my life。 Brought to tears so many times。 It’s so rare in this world to see a relationship between two people like Patti and Robert, and less so to be allowed to experience even a fraction of the love between them。 Literally crying as I write this review。 Thank you to my sponsor dad for lending me the book :-)
